If you have a product to sell you need traffic. It doesn’t matter if you are selling online or offline. In order to make money anywhere you need to get it in front of people. Online is the best option for selling something because you can sell to the whole world. But you can’t sell anything without traffic.

PPC (Pay Per Click) is actually the fastest way to get traffic. But you have to know what you’re doing unless you like wasting money.

I am going to give you some tips on how to generate more traffic fast while helping your search engine rankings as well. All of these options are free and work really well.

When getting traffic to your website there are a couple things you want to do. You want traffic quickly but you also want to be around for the long haul. Here are some strategies that will allow you to do both.

• Press Release Marketing – A lot of people don’t think their website or what they are offering is worthy enough to do a press release. If you think that, let me tell you that you are wrong. You have just as much to offer as a Fortune 500 Company. Press releases offer you the opportunity to get A Lot of traffic and backlinks fast.

You get this traffic because the press release directories you submit to syndicate your press release to other websites automatically. If you do a search for just about anything now-a-days you will notice a news section within the search results. With the right keywords your press release could be sitting nicely on the first page of Google, Yahoo, or Bing in as little as 24 hours.

Here are some great press release sites to submit to: PRWeb (Paid but the BEST), PRLog.org, Free-Press-Releases, I-Newswire, 1-888-press-release

• Social Bookmarking – This is a great strategy for both traffic and backlinks. A Good amount of people search these sites looking for information, tips, and advice that they may not find via the search engines. Take DIGG for instance. This site gets massive amounts of traffic. The key to sites like DIGG is submitting content that will get promoted and moved up to the homepage.

To do that you want to submit content that is mostly likely to do that. Submitting your own website will not make this happen. People on these sites like entertaining, controversial, or news worthy topics that they can actually comment on. Submit things like your press release, videos, or a guest blog post you did. Some other big players in social bookmarking include Stumbleupon, Del.icio.us, Reddit

• Video Marketing – This is huge! I put this 3rd because it takes a little longer to put a video together if you have never done this. You DON”T even need expensive software to do this. Are you on a PC? Use Windows Movie Maker (it comes free on every PC). Are you on a mac? Use iMovie. Free tools are great. Use them!

Video Marketing is huge because we now live in a video society. From YouTube to HULU to NetFlix online movie streaming. It’s no longer foreign to go online to watch a video, movie, or TV show. As the world uses the internet more and more to watch videos only gives you an opportunity to show them what you have to offer. And it’s all Free. • Article Marketing – Don’t let anyone tell you that article marketing is dead. I don’t know about you but I still see Ezine Articles in the top 5 of some search results. Other article directories have the power to get ranked highly as well. Submitting your article to the top article directories give you great high authority backlinks and you get traffic from these sites as well.

Here are some top article directories to submit to: Ezine Articles, Go Articles, Articlesbase, Article Dashboard, ISnare

• Forum Marketing – My forum marketing strategy is not your Daddy’s forum marketing. I put this last because it’s the most time consuming, but actually is the most effective when it comes to backlinks and improving your search engine rankings. Of course you want to participate in your niche forums. Participating in your niche forum is a great way to find new customers and you also learn what is needed in that industry. That gives you an opportunity to fill a void and quickly become an expert in the niche.

But I use forums for backlinks. This is what I do and it works extremely well.

1. Create a profile on any forum (No it DOES NOT have to be related. Use any forum. I choose high pagerank forums. Even .gov and .edu forums)
2. Use the signature box in your profile to create anchored backlinks to your site
3. Most forums use the BB Code System. So you will use something like this: [url=http://getweddingplanningtips.com/]wedding planning tips[/url]

• Not all forums allow you to put in a signature. But you can put your whole url in the website field when filling out your profile. A link is a link so take it.

That’s it. You don’t have to go post anything or try to fit in at all of the forums. If you feel like you have to post something post in the “Introduce Yourself” thread. Most forums have this section at the top of the post threads. But you can get by just using the forum profile for your backlinks. The forum profile pages do get indexed and do count. Therefore improving your search engine ranking. I know because I have gotten HIGH search engine results using ONLY this strategy.

The best part about this strategy is it can be outsourced. Go to the Warrior Forum and do a search in the Warrior for Hire section and you will see people offering to do this for you. They sometimes refer to this strategy as Paul and Angela Backlinks.

I like the warrior forum because if someone is not for real the forum will call them out. It keeps everyone honest and when you’re outsourcing that is high on my list of requirements.

Trying to increase your search engine ranking is not the easiest thing to do if you don’t know where to start.  The methods used today to increase your search engine rankings may seem like rocket science to you, so you probably have avoided dealing with this issue. I am here to tell you – the time has come to face your website! A high search engine ranking for your website is so essential that if you have the slightest desire to actually succeed in your business, there is no way you can continue to avoid this issue.

At least 85% of people looking for goods and services on the Internet find websites through search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing. The idea of optimizing your pages for high search engine rankings is to attract targeted customers to your site who will be more than likely to make a purchase. The higher your page comes up in search engine results, the greater the traffic that is directed to your website. That’s what search engine optimization (SEO) is about.

You can immerse yourself in all the technical information available online to figure out how to optimize your web pages to achieve higher rankings. Or you can look at a few simple items on your pages, make some small adjustments, and most likely see improved rankings quite rapidly. The first item you should examine is the title bar on your homepage.

The title bar is the colored bar at the top of the page. Look at the words that appear there when you access your home page. To increase search engine rankings, the words on your homepages’ title bar should include the most important keywords or phrases, one of which would include your company name.

Then click on all your links and examine the title bars on the pages you access. Each title bar on every single page of your site should contain the most important keywords and phrases taken from the page itself. However, avoid very long strings of keywords, keeping them to six words or less. Avoid repeating keywords more than once in the title bars, and make sure that identical words are not next to each other.

*TIP* Place your keyword twice within the first 100 characters in your description meta tag

The next item to put under your microscope is your website content. Search engines generally list sites that contain quality content rather than cool looking graphics. The text on your site must contain the most important keywords – the words that potential customers will be typing into search engines to find your site.

Aim to have around 250 words on each page, but if this is not desirable due to your design, aim for at least 100 carefully chosen words. If you want to achieve a high ranking on search engines, this text is essential. However, the search engines must be able to read the text, meaning that the text must be in HTML and not graphic format.

To find out if your text is in HTML format, take your cursor and try to highlight a word or two. If you are able to do this, the text is HTML. If the text will not highlight, it is probably in graphic form. In this case, ask your webmaster to change the text into HTML format in order to increase your search engine rankings.

Next we come to what is called meta tags. I know this sounds like something out of science fiction, but it is really just simple code. Many people believe that the keywords meta tags are the key to high search engine rankings, but in reality, they only have a limited effect. Google doesn’t even bother reading them. Still, it’s worth adding them in the event that the other 2  search engine (Yahoo & Bing) will use the keywords meta tags in their ranking formula.

To find out if your page is set up with meta tags, you must access the code. To do this, click the “view” button on the browser menu bar, and select “source.” This will pull up a window revealing the underlying code that created the page. If there are meta tags, they usually appear near the top of the window. For example, a meta tag would read: meta name=”description” content=. If you don’t find code that reads like this, ask your webmaster to put them in.

Lastly, we come to the issue of link popularity. This is a factor that is extremely important in terms of search engine rankings. Almost all search engines use link popularity to rank your website. Link popularity is based on the quality of the sites linking to your web pages.

There are many ways to check your backlinks. I use seobook. This is a toolbar that really gives you some great tools to use. It doesn’t hurt that it’s free. Download your seobook toolbar. If you install the toolbar and discover there aren’t many sites linked up to yours, consider launching a link building campaign.

Launching a link building campaign, when done right, takes time, research, and tools. The first thing you want to do is check out your competition. A good free option is Traffic Travis by Mark Ling. Understanding your competition is the only way to beat them. Once you know where they are getting backlinks you can get back links from the same place or similiar websites.

Other than the websites your competition uses to get backlinks you can get your own backlinks elsewhere too.

***TIP*** If your site is brand new or not ranking well use web 2.0 websites to boost your search engine rankings. Use squidoo, hubpages, ning, blogger, etc. etc. These sites all have a high pagerank and thousands of pages. Putting your content on these will help get you ranked faster and higher first.
